Survival Tips for Typhoons

Survival Tips for Typhoons

Survival Tips for Typhoons

Typhoons are no joke.

They are among the most destructive forces on the planet. The powerful winds and high amount of rain that they carry can certainly leave plenty of destruction in their wake.

Countless lives and untold amounts of properties have already been lost. And all due to the powerful typhoons that have rampaged their way through various countries.

People living in typhoon prone areas have somehow become used to it as they occur several times in a year. They prepare for the worst and especially if the typhoon is a particularly strong one. But let’s face it, sometimes, even the best prepared individuals stiff suffer significant damage and loss.

It is hard to argue against being properly prepared, though. Being prepared will help minimize damage to life and property. And best of all, it increases the chances of survival!

So why not take a few minutes of your time to read up on the following tips that can help you survive in a typhoon.

How to Survive a Typhoon?

The key to survival in any situation is being prepared. If you do your homework, then it lessens the chance of tragedy or any unseen catastrophe.

Sure, there will always be a thing or two that an individual can tend to overlook, but at least you’ll be able to cover most of the important areas of concern.

By being prepared, you are going to considerably lessen the margin for error or in this case disaster. That margin, however small it might be, could pretty much mean your life and those of your loved ones.

To be more organized, preparation efforts should be divided in different phases. For a typhoon, it would perhaps be wise to divide the various survival tips into three:

  • Before the typhoon
  • During the typhoon
  • After the typhoon

Tips for Survival Before the Typhoon

This is perhaps the most crucial part of the preparation process. The level of preparation before the typhoon actually hits is going to determine the entire course of action during and after the event.

Emergency Preparedness: Things to Do During a Disaster

So here is how to get ready before the typhoon hits:

  • Make sure to store adequate supply of both food and clean water. If some of the food needs to be cooked, make sure that it is also prepared adequately.
  • Check out your hose carefully. Examine it closely to see if there are any areas or parts that need to be repaired or even replaced.
  • Stay updated with the latest weather reports, updates, and developments.
  • Take note of where you place your flashlights, emergency lights, candles, matches, and similar items. The same goes for battery powered radios and generators. Make sure that they are within easy reach.
  • If you got any pets or domesticated animals in your home, make sure that they are in a secure and safe place.
  • Prepare clothes, food, first aid kit, battery powered radios, and flashlights/candles just in case you’ll need to move to a different and more secure place later on.

Tips for Survival During the Typhoon

The following tips are aimed to help during the actual typhoon. This is the scariest part and everyone needs to keep their wits about them if they are going to pull through.

  • Just stay inside your home while the typhoon is passing through.
  • Important items in the house and electrical appliances need to be placed on higher ground.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments in the state of the weather.
  • Should you run out of safe drinking water or it’s simply not available, you could simply boil water for about 20 minutes. Make sure that it is then placed in a clean container with a cover.
  • Keep a close watch on any candles that are lighted while the typhoon is passing through. Do the same for any open gas lamps.
  • Should there be a need to evacuate, stay calm throughout the process.
  • Turn off your home’s main power switch and make sure that all openings are closed.

Tornado Damage

Tips for Survival After the Typhoon

It is still important to learn a few important tips on what to do after the typhoon. So here are the things that need to be done after the natural disaster:

  • If your house sustained some damage then just be sure that it is already safe before you go back in.
  • Be on the lookout for any live wires that might be hidden or immersed under water.
  • If there are any fallen electric posts and damaged cables then report it immediately.
  • Be very careful upon entering your house again. There might some dangerous animals that have wandered in there like snakes, so watch out.

These are some of the things that can be done in preparation for facing a typhoon. It’s just so important to know precisely what to do before, during, and after the natural disaster strikes. And that’s all because facing a typhoon is no laughing matter.
